Rogg Streambattle stared out into the expanse of trees that lay before him. The mercenary otter had expected a little more of a militaristic contract outline from Lady Lorna, but all she had said was to find the rebel leader and kill him, then she sent Rogg on his way out the front gates. The young otter did not even know for sure what species this leader was, but he had overheard one of the guards talking about a skipper that was the leader of the insurrection, and since skippers were otters Rogg guessed that his target was one. How was the mercenary going to find this Skipper? He had no idea, maybe he could find some woodlander and find out from it. Yes, that would probably be the best plan. So he struck off west into Mossflower hoping to find a woodlander soon.

As Rogg walked his mind was in a turmoil deciding weather or not to actually go through with the contract and kill the Skipper. The young otter had never actually killed another otter before, but he told himself that it was for a good cause; money, but the otter knew in his heart that he could not kill another of his own species, he would have to cross that bridge when he came to it though.

He was snapped out of his thoughts when he heard movement up ahead, the otter silently drew his sword and advanced toward the sounds in the bushes. He could see the faint outline of another creature on the other side of the shrubbery. The mercenary otter crouched low and prepared to leap on the unsuspecting creature. Without much further thought he leapt on his victim, grabbing it's head and smashing it into an oak tree. It was a young, male squirrel, and even though the hit against the tree was a hard one, he did not slip into unconsciousness. Rogg spoke calmly to the frightened squirrel, hoping to get the information he required without having to harm the little squirrel.
"Stop struggling, I'm not going to hurt you... Unless you don't tell me what i need to know. Where is the rebel camp? Tell me, or die."
The squirrel gave his interrogator a terrified look and spoke in an extremely speedy voice brought on by fear.
"They're camped about a league from here, directly west. Please! Don't hurt me, I hate the insurrectionists as much as the next beast!"
Rogg could tell that the squirrel was lying about hating the rebels, who could hate the freedom fighters? No, the mercenary otter knew that the rebels must be fighting for a good cause if Lorna wanted their leader neutralized. He let go of the quivering squirrel, letting him drop to tho ground. He stalked off through the trees calling back to his information source.
"Thanks, now don't tell anybeast that I was here or I'll come back and skin you alive"

When Rogg had traveled about a league he caught the sounds and smells of an encampment in front of him. Now was the time for silent and patient viewing of the camp. The big otter stopped and took out his yew bow and notched a poisoned arrow onto the string. He did not normally like to use his bow, but for a long-range assassination it was a necessary incumbent. The mercenary crouched and moved up over small hill and saw the rebel camp, he then fell flat on his stomach and took in the scene before him; cooking fires, tents, and assorted creatures going about their daily chores, nothing very exciting. Rogg hated waiting for a target to show, but he had to wait for this 'Skipper' to make an appearance. The otter sighed and started scanning the scene before him, searching for his quarry. Rogg sighed, this was going to be a long day.....

‘Your past defines you, but you determine your own future, to forge yourself anew again and again. It is the same cycle.’ Suddenly he was standing, looking more terrible than before, dressed in full armor, battered and bloodstained.

This was true. The Skipper could not deny it...Only he would be able to determine what path he would take his life. Still he had doubt in his mind on how able he would be to do that.

‘The fight wearies me through these eons, these decades pull at my soul. Please…’ He trailed off, and suddenly seemed to be moving away, though he stood still.

This was the one thing that was able to soften The skipper's hard heart. A cry for help always seem to do so. It was his weakness. "Okay..." The the figure disappeared. "Okay! Fine! FINE! I'll help!" he said almost in an angry tone. "FIIIIIIIIINE! I'll do It!!!!!" The Skipper's vision began to warp away from him at high speed as he woke up.

---------

The Skipper sat up in his bed but fell off as he tried to balance his left side with his paw. He feel to the deck with a thud and a crash he his bedside table feel over, knocking several items over to the deck. Blade, his first mate, heard from the helm and ran down the stairs to the deck to the Skipper's cabin. "Skip! ye alright?!" The Skipper propped himself up. He was sweating quite a bit too. "Just a Nightmare...Change course...inland...."

“You have not been battling my guards. Why are you here?”

Oh yotz. This was the commander of the fortress? Great, Rogg did not normally begin contract negations by calling the leader a 'stupid tralk'. But her thinking that the mercenary was a slave pulled a trigger in his heart, the otter did have some pride even after all of the rude creatures he had met in his short life and he thought that he did look a little better then a slave, but that was the way of things. He had just let his words slip out, he must remember not to do that in the future. He dropped his belligerent demeanor and stood respectfully in front of the vermin captain. If she had work, the young otter might want to mince his words so as not to offend her.
"I am Rogg Streambattle. I'm a mercenary and heard that you were in need of some assistance in..... neutralizing some subversives in the woodlands. In other words: I'm here to kill fools that need killing" He spoke in a calm, non-derisive voice that he hoped would help the fox want to kill his less. He hoped....

"Are you serious? You stupid tralk, did you really think that I'm a new slave for you to play with? I'm not really that frelling scruffy am I?"

For a moment all was silent, as those nearby stared at the otter in horrified amazement. The silence stretched longer and more uncomfortable, until it was broken by a strange sound. It started out low, but grew louder.

It was the sound of laughter.

Now all eyes were riveted on their commander, strange incredulous looks before every beast suddenly found that their tasks were much more important than originally thought and scurried off. Only the wall guards remained. Lorna advanced the few feet between herself and the otter, now fallen silent.

“Smart one, isn’t he, Bloodtongue?” She asked the nearest weasel casually as she looked Rogg over. The weasel nodded, but remained silent, Bloodtongue was not named for his habit of taking his enemie’s tongues, but for the fact that he only had a stub of one himself.

Her whip came up, the fierce bullwhip that won her the battle for leader of the fort instead of her usual studded cat-o-nine coming butt-end up under his chin to force him to meet her gaze. Not that she thought this one would hide from her in that way. Not at all like that worthless healer-otter Kirig had last dragged in.

“The ‘stupid tralk’ you address is Captain Lorna, commander of this fort.” Her voice was low, soft. Deadly, underneath. “You are the second otter to come to me recently.” She picked at his armor with one contemtious paw before letting it and the paw holding the whip drop. “Nor should you think that because you come armored before me that you cannot become a slave. You would not be so useless as the last, I should say.” She stepped back a step, making it look as if she surveyed some possible new property instead of retreated. Lorna never retreated, and this wasn’t a retreat.

“You have not been battling my guards. Why are you here?”

“Are ya now.” “An’ just why d’ya think we’ll be stupid enough ta let an otta in dese walls?”

Rogg sought the sky for inspiration. Why did vermin always think that he hated them because he was an otter? It was one of the most annoying things to the mercenary, he could not stand the common misconception that all otters are good. The young otter then tilted his head slightly and replied.
"Why would you let me in? Well, let me put it this way: let me in, or I kill you all"
Maybe those were not the best words in this situation, after all, he was standing in front of the gates of a large vermin fortress. Well, what was said was said and Rogg could not do anything about that. The mercenary otter fondled the hilt of his blade, ready to fight, if necessary.

“Wal, Capt’n Lorna ‘az been lookin’ fer a beast ta kill da rebellion leader… drop yer weapons, waterdog.”“All o’ ‘em.” “C’mon.” “Take ‘em up ta see da Capt’n. An’ no funny business.” “Ya c’n get yer weap’ns back from me, if she lets ya stay alive.”

This was a stroke of luck, assignations were Rogg's specialty. But another otter? He did not know about that, could the mercenary otter really kill another of his own species? Well, he would have to cross that bridge when he came to it. He looked back up at the top of the gate and unbuckled his sword belt, normally this would not be an option, but there were to many hostiles to not disarm and follow along.

“Why are you not on the walls? Do not tell me that fool Kirig captured another useless slave for me!”

When they would go into fort Fort N’tashi Rogg was amazed at the size and immensity of the interior of the walls. There was also a strange feeling about the place, like happiness and other otters all around. But there could not have ever been otters in such an evil place. Yet still, there was a strange feeling about the place... The young otter's musings were cut short by the appearance of captain Lorna and her remark. Her words angered Rogg, did she really think that an armored otter was a new slave? What a fool. He felt indignant and made it felt in his reply.
"Are you serious? You stupid tralk, did you really think that I'm a new slave for you to play with? I'm not really that frelling scruffy am I?" The otter raised his webbed paws in a exasperated fassion, he did not fully realize that this was the commander of the fort.....

River sat on the ground entertaining some of the Dibbuns Brooke was watching while she hustled around to make sure none of them disappeared. He wasn't doing much to help. In fact, he was making things worse by encouraging them to run around. Just when Brooke looked about ready to brain him with a nearby rock did he stop and solemnly look up at her from his seated position. "I do believe I'm needed over there." He said jerking his head toward where Skipp and several others were meeting.

He ran across camp and got to the little gathering just in time for introductions. Either Skipp failed to notice his late entrance or chose to not say anything. Either way he wasn't getting chewed out. At the mention of his name, he shot everyone a jovial grin and winked at the hare that always seemed to be with the badgerlady. If there was someone who needed to lighten up, it was her. With a sheepish grin, he turned to the sable next to him. "And why, might I ask matey, am I needed here? Other than to look good y'know." He said laughter booming from deep within his chest.

"In that case I don't suggest to burst through the leaves like you did when you make an appearance..." Said Blade, Skipper's First mate who had an irritated tone about his speech, looking over at Brush. "Easy Blade..." Skipper said putting a paw on Blades shoulder to warn him before things got out of control. "He should be more careful Skip...what if We'd a killed 'im?"

“I don’t burst through leaves, otter.” Enon said flatly, looking at Blade. Nothing on her face suggested she was doing anything other than stating a fact. If they wanted to point fingers at imaginary reasons for their jumpiness, let them. She knew they were seabeasts. Seabeasts never did well in the thick forests of Mossflower.

"One less beast to worry about..."

“Ah, you needn’t worry ‘bout us, laddie. She said easily, following Brush as he led the short way to the main camp. “Though if ye are that uneasy aboot our forests ye kin go an’ shoot at Fort N’Tashi until ye feel better.” She grinned a short, feral grin that exposed her teeth, flashing white in her ebony fur. “Skipper!” she hailed as they arrived. The otter leader turned from his conversation with Lady Carwyn to greet the new arrivals.

“Ah, Skipper m’lad!” He said, reaching to shake the SoSO’s paw. “You’ve met Lady Carwyn o’ course, and Badgerlady Ryn and her lieutenant? I don’t think you’ve met my first mate, this is River…” He continued with the introductions, ending with Soko. “And this is our Champion, Sokana. She called the meeting.” He stepped backwards, motioning Soko into the middle of the group, encouraging her to speak.

"Aye...More than you know..."

Martin didn’t protest, he merely bowed his head in acknowledgment. The scene changed again, the other ghostly warriors disappearing, fading into the distance as the grass waved peacefully and the sun shone.

but was every Skipper visited by this Warrior mouse?

‘The need has never been so great.’ Martin assured the Skipper, sitting upon the grass in his green habit. He looked serenely on Skipper, his eyes steady and calm.

"I ask you..." He said looking up from thought. "Will I be...as welcome as the previous Skipper's were before me....I-I'm not like any of the Others...I-I walk the Line...or so i've been told..."

‘I have been waiting many years, Skipper. Forty years my Redwallers have labored under N’tashi’s horde, forty years have the Skipper and his otters sheltered them. Forty years have Lady Ember and her squirrels worked with Skipper to protect them.

The Skipper of Sea Otters was very apprehensive of all this. Was there another Skipper on land? If so, The Skipper would be obligated to help...but...It was land...it wasn't his land...However Other Skipper's before him had often made trip to land to aid those in need...whose to say that this wasn't his time to contribute?

‘You know what it is to lose much, …

"Aye...More than you know..." This Skipper had lost everything he had except his life....he nearly lost that as well.

‘I send you now, if you will accept and take your place back for yourself, to the aid of the Skipper in Mossflower. Many many times has such a Skipper come to you, and helped you, Skippers of the Sea, win through your tasks. Equally you have helped them upon the sea, but never in my knowing has one such as you gone to land, and inland of land, to lend strength and hope there. They are few, stretched thin, but they seek to change the world.

Quite a bit of this flew over The Skipper's head. He already knew most of this...Still...he caught a few points here a there...Skippers before him had done these sort of things...but was every Skipper visited by this Warrior mouse? "I ask you..." He said looking up from thought. "Will I be...as welcome as the previous Skipper's were before me....I-I'm not like any of the Others...I-I walk the Line...or so i've been told..."

This was partially true. He did carry quiet a few of his Old traits from his past with him. His Brutality. Determination for vengeance. Hatred for certain beast, and Mercilessness. But perhaps he was overlooking what differed his from his past...

Arturo returned one last wave to the old squirrel he'd been traveling with the past few days. The graying fellow had actually been, of all things, friendly when they'd met by the river; a few moments later, he was paying something of a bargain for a ride to the shoreline. A good traveling companion was worth more than an extra bag of rations, and besides, Arturo could always forage for more. Frequent lack of customers (or, at least, customers who didn't run off or pull a weapon out at the first sight of a ferret) made that sort of skill a necessity.

In the meantime, though, it was unnecessary. The squirrel had given him a small sack of food, as well as a new cloak to replace his old, tattered one. It felt soft, so nice and new as the ferret took down the awning on his raft and stored the whole thing away in a sheltered inlet. A liberal covering of branches, leaves, and a little dirt kept the craft hidden, so he could freely wander off and explore the region. He knew that the fortress Salamandastron was nearby; he didn't have any inclination to go that way, though.

Why on earth would any ferret want to do that, good or no?

With that fact in mind, he set off in the opposite direction down the coast, trying not to remember his beloved Horizon, which lay somewhere out there...he only wished he could bring it back--

He and his thoughts came to a jarring halt as he saw smoke starting to rise nearby. In fact, he could see the slight glow of the flame, even in the glaring grayness. There were several creatures around it, and he froze as one of them seemed to notice him. It's pointing, it definitely does... After a moment of consideration, he moved slowly toward the little assembly. That fire did look nice...
