A few miles out from the shore, the dim lanterns of the Skipper's ship The Lancebreaker could be seen, fading in and out from the waves break. There was a heavy rain pounding the ship, but that didn't phase any of the crew on board...they were used to being wet...of course they were sleep as well...

Late night shifts on the crows nest were always the best...for the those that had them. It meant you could lay over the railing and snooze a bit being able to wake up every now and then to look around, then it was back to sleep. However it was bad for the others safety on the ship, for those that were sleeping. You never know when one might make their way to the ship during the time the crows nest is asleep...

Martin the Warrior drifted silently, time was irrelevant to the dead. Centuries weighed no more than a feather, and flitted by on flight-silent wings, but these times. Oh, these times. Martin felt an overwhelming, grasping heaviness, his spirit dragged with the weight of the darkness consuming Mossflower and his Abbey. He knew that the rebellion, organized as it may be, and even with the addition of the badgers and hares, would need help. And so he drifted, searching, always searching. It was how he’d found the dreams of the badger lady and prompted her to leave her lands to the north. It was how he had found the ebony squirrel and nudged her subconscious back to her old haunts in Mossflower, there to bring hope to the Camp Moss warriors with the promise of help from outside. And it was he who had spoken in broken dreams to the badgerlady of Salamandastron, encouraging her to follow the squirrels on their quest. Now he found the Lancebreaker and those aboard.

Martin floated above the ship, though the ship he saw was part of the everchanging-landscape about him, and not a physical thing. He tucked hands into habit sleeves and considered the slumbering consciousnesses below him. Skippers were good, tough beasts followed by many loyal followers. This one was a Skipper of Sea Otters, though the skipper himself was a river otter. He found the mind he sought and descended, passing through the deck and into the captain’s cabin.
Skipper. The warrior mouse called, now dressed in shiny armor with his sword at his side. Skipper.

The Skipper of Sea otters was in a deep, dark, sleep. The continuous rocking of the ship along with the crashing of the waves against the hull put him in an even deeper sleep, as well as every other beast on board.

All the Skipper saw was black in his dream. Suddenly, things began building in his mind. Mist covered the cold, wet, deck and everything around him. He was standing on the deck of his own ship. He looked around him into the mist and drew his twin cutlass's upon seeing the Armored mouse. He pointed a cutlassat the mouse and held the other at his side. "State who ya are...and why yer 'ere..."he said to the mouse, not really knowing what was happening.

Martin ascended to the deck, his arms crossed as he scrutinized the beast before him. Metal should have scraped against metal, his sword should have made a sound as it tapped slowly in its sheath against the body armor as Martin adjusted it. It should have, but instead all that was heard was a strange, unsettling silence in the fog. Rather, Irvine Wolf, Skipper of Sea Otters, you should ask yourself. Martin started walking towards the Skipper, not pausing a beat in his silent walk as he brushed past the otter and walked through the ship’s rail onto the surrounding sea. Who I am. And who you are.

The environment shifted, to a gently sloping hill, bare of all things except for the two of them. Tell me, Skipper. The mouse shifted his position, now wearing a simple tunic but still bearing his sword. Why do you roam the seas? Why do you exist?

Rather, Irvine Wolf, Skipper of Sea Otters, you should ask yourself.

The Skipper looked puzzled. Almost in a scared, frightened way. How did this mouse know his name?!? No one knew of his real name but two beast in his crew, and they were not allowed to even mention his name. They might not have even remembered it. "H-how did you my name...?" he stammered. "Nobeast knows my name...that name is lost to me in history..." he stated, trying to make a point.

Who I am. And who you are.

This was all happening to fast for him. He would have fainted, had he not been in a dream and already out. "I know exactly who I am...I'm the Skipper of sea otters...And you are...you...I don't know..." He hung his head in a tilt and looked up in a glare.

Tell me, Skipper. The mouse shifted his position, now wearing a simple tunic but still bearing his sword. Why do you roam the seas? Why do you exist?

He was getting irritated now. He didn't like a beast he didn't know to know so much about him, and asking personal questions he was quiet confused about. Not that he didn't know the answers or how to answer them, but the fact he was asking them.

"I roam the seas...cause...I'm there to protect them from what I was...what I used to be...to defend and protect the seas from those who i used to be like. I exist...because..." He paused. That was the ever pressing question...in all truth he shouldn't even be breathing. He shouldn't even exist after what all he was responsible for in the past. for the beast he used to be. "I don't know...."

Martin spread his paws in a cryptic yet unambiguous gesture.
You would be surprised, my friend, what one may learn if one is dead. Faces appeared, spirits who had known Irvine in life. They sped by quickly, the few and the many, and last were his parents, who stayed but a split second, but waved and smiled before melting away.

"I know exactly who I am...I'm the Skipper of sea otters...And you are...you...I don't know..."

Be easy, otter. You are among friends. Martin and Skipper were suddenly surrounded by scores of warriors, champions of Redwall, perilous hares, and deadly warriors unaffiliated with any group, all from ages past. You wish to know me, and to know yourself. You exist to defend and to protect, to kill the foebeast and to die for the innocent. Martin’s voice, initially quiet, grew in force as he spoke. We live to sell our lives dearly, to take joy where there is joy, to protect our friends and we live to be perilous in battle. We are warriors, and I am MARTIN THE WARRIOR, the guide and the light, the sword and the rose.

He drew his sword with a scrape of metal on leather, thrusting it aloft with a cry echoed.

Redwaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllll!!

As the Skipper heard these words he was entranced, like a dibbun listening to a bedtime story. The Skipper was hard beast, Fearless in battle and never relenting in his attacks. But there was something about this Warrior mouse. That he could hardly deny. He was wiser than he was...
The Skipper had a hard life growing up. Being enslaved on a slaver ship, being forced to kill his own parents by his own paw, to eventually being the captain of a slaver ship. He had gained all his traits from those experiences. Even after he left that life he still carried most of those traits with him. They had grown on him, making him one of the most feared beast to come against on the sea. But standing before this warrior mouse all of that was forgotten to him. It was a mind boggling experience. Why was he doing this? Something had changed in him but he knew it wouldn't last whatever it was. Not for the beast he was...

We live to sell our lives dearly, to take joy where there is joy, to protect our friends and we live to be perilous in battle. We are warriors, and I am MARTIN THE WARRIOR, the guide and the light, the sword and the rose.

The Skipper tilted his head and squinted an eye. He had heard that name before. It was in his past somewhere...maybe in a memory somewhere. Lots of things were locked away in his past. Where it was the shriek of a falling beast or a whisper in the distance...he couldn't explain it.

Redwaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllll!!

The cry nearly split his foundations. He dropped a knee to the floor and gritted his teeth. Halfway irritated, but only because he was in pain. Whatever was in him also heard the cry and was shaken and irritated for another reason. He looked up and around at all the beast. No use in trying to draw a sword. But what made him want to? He stood up and placed a paw on his cutlass handle holstered to his back. He jerked away as a throb his hit skull and a sudden flash of several images rammed their way through his mind. He fell to his knees again seeing images of a great Red-stoned building, scenes of battle, Camp moss and finally Martin the Warrior who was standing before him still. "You obviously want something from me..." He said looking up, slightly irritated. "What...."

Martin smiled, lowering his sword. He held it by his side, loosely, but in preparedness for battle. There surroundings changed again, showing the mountain and the hares outside it, marching away led by their Badgerlady, a white ghost badger in forest, and finally they seemed to alight by the three willows. ‘I have been waiting many years, Skipper. Forty years my Redwallers have labored under N’tashi’s horde, forty years have the Skipper and his otters sheltered them. Forty years have Lady Ember and her squirrels worked with Skipper to protect them.’ The warrior mouse looked sadly upon Redwall, its rosy walls and grounds now harbingers of death, pain and destruction rather than hope, healing and hospitality. ‘You know what it is to lose much, but I have existed for many lifetimes, and I feel the tearing that this brings to me. If Redwall is not restored…’ He turned away from the thought and turned back to the Skipper. ‘I send you now, if you will accept and take your place back for yourself, to the aid of the Skipper in Mossflower. Many many times has such a Skipper come to you, and helped you, Skippers of the Sea, win through your tasks. Equally you have helped them upon the sea, but never in my knowing has one such as you gone to land, and inland of land, to lend strength and hope there. They are few, stretched thin, but they seek to change the world.’ Redwall loomed above them, promise of what it could be, Fort or Abbey, with a terrible foreboding that pressed on Skipper. ‘They seek to set right wrongs made a generation ago, and for that they need help. I seek allies for my people, and so I ask you.’

The Skipper of Sea Otters was very apprehensive of all this. Was there another Skipper on land? If so, The Skipper would be obligated to help...but...It was land...it wasn't his land...However Other Skipper's before him had often made trip to land to aid those in need...whose to say that this wasn't his time to contribute?

‘You know what it is to lose much, …

"Aye...More than you know..." This Skipper had lost everything he had except his life....he nearly lost that as well.

Quite a bit of this flew over The Skipper's head. He already knew most of this...Still...he caught a few points here a there...Skippers before him had done these sort of things...but was every Skipper visited by this Warrior mouse? "I ask you..." He said looking up from thought. "Will I be...as welcome as the previous Skipper's were before me....I-I'm not like any of the Others...I-I walk the Line...or so i've been told..."

This was partially true. He did carry quiet a few of his Old traits from his past with him. His Brutality. Determination for vengeance. Hatred for certain beast, and Mercilessness. But perhaps he was overlooking what differed his from his past...

Martin didn’t protest, he merely bowed his head in acknowledgment. The scene changed again, the other ghostly warriors disappearing, fading into the distance as the grass waved peacefully and the sun shone.

but was every Skipper visited by this Warrior mouse?

‘The need has never been so great.’ Martin assured the Skipper, sitting upon the grass in his green habit. He looked serenely on Skipper, his eyes steady and calm.

"I ask you..." He said looking up from thought. "Will I be...as welcome as the previous Skipper's were before me....I-I'm not like any of the Others...I-I walk the Line...or so i've been told..."

‘Your past defines you, but you determine your own future, to forge yourself anew again and again. It is the same cycle.’ Suddenly he was standing, looking more terrible than before, dressed in full armor, battered and bloodstained. ‘The fight wearies me through these eons, these decades pull at my soul. Please…’ He trailed off, and suddenly seemed to be moving away, though he stood still. It was Skipper who moved rapidly backwards, zooming away from the peaceful hill towards his ship. One last cry reached his ears before Martin disappeared.

‘Please…

This was true. The Skipper could not deny it...Only he would be able to determine what path he would take his life. Still he had doubt in his mind on how able he would be to do that.

‘The fight wearies me through these eons, these decades pull at my soul. Please…’ He trailed off, and suddenly seemed to be moving away, though he stood still.

This was the one thing that was able to soften The skipper's hard heart. A cry for help always seem to do so. It was his weakness. "Okay..." The the figure disappeared. "Okay! Fine! FINE! I'll help!" he said almost in an angry tone. "FIIIIIIIIINE! I'll do It!!!!!" The Skipper's vision began to warp away from him at high speed as he woke up.

---------

The Skipper sat up in his bed but fell off as he tried to balance his left side with his paw. He feel to the deck with a thud and a crash he his bedside table feel over, knocking several items over to the deck. Blade, his first mate, heard from the helm and ran down the stairs to the deck to the Skipper's cabin. "Skip! ye alright?!" The Skipper propped himself up. He was sweating quite a bit too. "Just a Nightmare...Change course...inland...."
