"Where am I going to beat you at the bet?"
He smirked. "Huh, shooting arrows isn't as easy as you think!"Neither is skipping, He couldn't help but think sarcastically. He shouldered his equipment and briefly questioned why he was doing this to begin with. That thought was pushed aside and immediately followed by a vague curiosity at how Brookesong would look like shooting an arrow. Blushing furiously, this thought was brushed aside much more quickly than the first. Clearing his throat to hide his embarrassment, he lead the way back the surface.
Emerging once again aboveground, Danol was immediately hit with a blast of chill wind. Lacking any other 'real' winter clothing, the young otter soon came to fully appreciate the scarf that Brookesong had given to him. Extending a paw to help her out of the cavity in the earth, he dimly noted the oddly smoothing scent that pervaded the scarf.
"Its just out here, nothing special I'm afraid. Ready to lose that bet?"

"Huh, shooting arrows isn't as easy as you think!" said Dan as he turned to lead her to wherever they were going. She just stuck her tongue out at his back and sped up slightly so as to be walking next to him. She grabbed the offered hand thankfully and climbed out.
She tried to figure out what to do next, but came up empty handed. Turning to Dan.
"Ok, I'm at a loss... What do I do know?" she asked him. This was going to be a veery interesting bet. She stood there while she waited for an answer.

"Ok, I'm at a loss... What do I do now?"
He blinked at her, disbelieving. Surely she was teasing him. She didn't know how to shoot a.... wha? When he had offered to teach her, he'd assumed that she would know how to at the very least get started, and that he would help her to improve her aim. The concept wasn't a very hard one: pull the arrow back in the middle of the bowstring and let go. If she hadn't at least somebeast use a bow before, he figured she'd get it just by looking at the weapon. He made several indecipherable paw gestures as he dithered trying to kickstart his startled mind into explaining the concept to her. "Well... you.... uh.... wait a seco-"
He froze mid-sentence as another thought struck him. This was Brookesong he was talking about. Not that he meant that she, although slightly airy(he was certainly one to talk), was unable to immediately grasp the concept of a bow and arrow, but rather that she was prone to playful trickery. That and she was female. In his(short) experience with females, Danol had found that a large majority of them took delight in playing coy and employing whatever tactics they conceived to catch their male counterparts off-guard. They were often successful.
Or, a third thought mused, It could be that you're silly and you're overthinking this completely. Regardless, "Well, its like this." He demonstrated by shrugging the bow off his shoulder and firmly grasping the bow's shaft mid-way. "You have to set your footpaws firmly in the ground and straighten your back, then hold the bow with the paw you're least familiar with, to start."

She watched as stuttered, paused and got a far away look in his eyes. Waving her paw in front of his face, she said; "Hello, anyone home. I thought I was gonna learn how to shoot an arrow?" Then when no response occurred, she grabbed the bow meant for her, and an arrow, setting it on the string in a way she knew was incorrect, she pulled back on the string, waiting for some sort of reaction. She tried to stifle her laughter as she thought of what his face would look like when he realized what she was doing. Then adopting a serious face, she pulled back further on the string. Inside her head, she was having massive issues controlling her laughter, so a few giggles escaped here and there. I wonder when he'll notice? she thought smiling in spite of herself.
