Heartsease still could not believe her luck at meeting a real hare of Salamandastron on her unplanned detour; as such, she had been happily talking the poor creature's ear off over the course of their travels. Aidan now knew all about the hares who'd aided her as a child, the ambition she'd awakened to after the incident, the training under a squirrel who'd visited the mountain in his younger days....
She did not, obviously, tell him that little jaunt was not entirely sanctioned. (It was likely that Aidan would figure it out himself, of course - she was not the first youngster to run away to join, and she would not be the last.)
"Ah! Is that it, there?"
The rabbitmaid scurried to the top of a small rise, standing on tip-paw as she looked out over the dunes rolling gently ahead of them. In the distance, Salamandastron could just be seen; Heartsease gazed happily at it, ears and whiskers forward, before turning to Aidan again.
"How much longer, sir? Afraid I'm not used to judging that much distance, haven't traveled so far before!"

"How much longer, sir? Afraid I'm not used to judging that much distance, haven't traveled so far before!"
“Yes, that’s Salamandastron.” Aidan chuckled, topping the rise more slowly than his enthusiastic companion. The old brigadier put a paw to his eyes, squinting as he judged the distance. Not far away the dunes began, but that only marked the beginning of the shore, not their distance from the mountain.
“It’ll be a couple days yet, lass. D’ye think ye can last that long without burstin’ outta yore skin?” He altered course for the mountain and started descending the hill, striking out just a tad more southerly. They would travel parallel the dunes for a couple days before cutting relatively straight west to Salamandastron. The difference was slight, but they would definitely make faster time out of the deep sand.

"Yes sir - if nothing else I'll be needing my skin when I get there, won't I?"
The rabbit giggled as she trotted to Aidan's side, briefly trying to match her stride to the hare's. Of course even with a shorter hare like the brigadier the size difference was a bit much to be entirely comfortable, so she quickly returned to her own natural stride, casting occasional sidelong looks at the mountain.
"The badger is a lady now... right? Farryn Silverclaw."
"Och aye, an' th'finest auld Badger Lady ye'll have th'privelege tae see." Saxifrage grinned as he came up on the rabbit's other side. That Farryn was likely to be the only Badger Lady Heartsease saw was, naturally, immaterial.
"Oh, I can imagine," Heartsease said happily. She gave her spear an experimental twirl, looking at the mountain again. Her voice was squeaking with excitement by now, but she was at least restrained enough to not just take off over the downs.

“Aye.” Aidan didn’t mention that the badgerlady was searching for a replacement. Although the last war had taken its toll on the badgerlady, she wasn’t ready to let her patrol know it. Only Aidan knew she was starting the search for her successor.
They walked for some time before they paused by a small stream. The sun was high in the sky, making the shadows all but disappear. Aidan lowered his pack to rest up right against a low bush. “Alright, Sax. Care to take this young maid out to search for berries or sommat? See if she can identify any tracks.” The old hare winked at the huge mountain sergeant.
Opening the flap of the pack, he shook his paws at the younger hares. “Go on, now, it’s a bally order, wot!”
