The sun was high in the sky in the middle of the day. Although the last few days had been awfully wet and gray, today the sun appeared in a nearly cloudless sky and dappled the water in golden sparkle. Maive had detested her first day within Mossflower, it had rained ceaselessly on her journey up the river. The rafts captain, an awfully quiet rat, had growled and muttered to himself about springtime for most of the first day and a half. Today, however, was turning out to be much different. Maive sat on the rafts edge, the river was high and fast flowing from rainfall and snow melt, but at lest the sun was out.
The otter's mood was beginning to improve, but the Rat had recently brought her down with the tale of the battle that had happened just moments before her arrival. Disappointed at having missed out, Maive was still interested to see the change in the landscape- so to speak. She wasn't a regular in these parts of the forest, in fact she did most of her work in the south or north. Mossflower was known for having awfully bland, black and white conflicts as far as a thrill seeker herself was concerned. But for as long as she'd known, a Vermin horde had ruled the area and this seemed to have changed recently.
"Diss es close," The rat said gruffly as the raft veered towards the shore, "Y'ead in a bit an' east from 'ere. After dis da river curves off a bit."
Maive glanced back at him with a slight grin, she stood up and riffled through her small pack. She produced a slim gold band, a bracelet, and handed it to the rat. "Thank y'sir, Safe sai..er... raftin' t'yah." He offered something between a snarl and a smile, she took it as a smile.
As the raft entered the shallower water, Maive gathered her things, quiver, bow, pack, and stepped into the waste high water. She waved the rat off as she trudged onto the shore. She checked her bowstring, keeping in mind the many tales she'd heard of beasts in this wilderness. Feeling confident about the new mini-venture, Maive began along a small path that ran along the shore, deciding she ought to stay in the sun and dry off a bit before diving into the thicker forest.
