Appearance:
Age: 12
Species: Shrew
Gender: Male
Appearance:
Brend is smallish, skinny, and always looks hungry, probably because he has been since his enslavement. His eyes are dark brown. He wears a red, short-sleeved tunic with yellow borders that is beginning to fray and fade. His fur is short, light gray mottled slightly with brown. He has few of the whip marks characteristic of slaves, as he was mostly protected from them by Laila until he was made a house servant.Belongings:
Only his aforementioned clothing. That, and a small pile of interesting pebbles he's found over time and stashed under the edge of his pallet.Job or Position:
Servant (he proved a bit weak for outdoor work)Personality:
Brend is tired of what the world is giving to him. He isn't suicidal, but has simply given up hope that his situation might improve someday. His main source of strength comes from Laila, and he tries to be hopeful for her sake. Alone, he is quiet and resentful, and he treats his captors with thinly veiled sarcasm. He is bright, but not in a scholarly fashion; he has practical wit, and is quick in mind, tongue, and speed.History and Background Information:
Brend was born into a small Guosim-like clan in the North. Most of the members had left, as their leader, Brend's father, was hotheaded, abusive, and a poor leader. As the clan slowly broke away, he took out his anger at this on his wife and children; one night, he stabbed Brend's mother in a severe fit of rage. He didn't realize Brend had seen, however; horrified, the little shrew, who was now about six, ran to his uncle to tell him.Any other details:
By the laws of their clan, a crime so strong as murder meant Brend's father was to lose his power and be cast out from the clan altogether. When Brend told his uncle, this is exactly what happened. However, the resultant celebration was short-lived; Brend's father returned in the middle of the night a month later and killed his brother while he slept. He then went to do the same to his son. Brend, however, saw him soon enough that he was able to run. Before long, he was safely away, but hopelessly lost. He was nine years old.
Three months later, Brend found himself in Mossflower. Seeing Fort N'tashi, he hurried toward it in the hope that somebeast there could help him.
Big mistake.
Brend was now a slave, toiling alongside others to grow what food they could for their captors. He was too young and not strong enough to keep up with such work; a guard would have beaten him to death had Laila not come to his aid. Eventually, he was made a house servant, as he clearly was not cut out for back-breaking labor. He has been a slave for three and a half years.
He was given some training with both rapiers and slings. He is notably poor in the use of a bow.Code Words: correct
